AISD’s New Garden to Café Program Allows School Garden Produce to be Served in School Meals

Great news! PEAS’ produce is currently going to member families, but now when we have abundance we will be able to share it through the cafeteria (in addition to the local food banks)!!!

Our wonderful Principal Lloyd continues to shine as a Changemaker.  She worked together with Ashoka’s Start Empathy Initiative and authored a section about Cunningham Elementary in the new book.  We’re so proud of our principal, and honored to be a Changemaker school.  You can purchase the book through Amazon:

Brighter Bites at Cunningham!!

Screen Shot 2016-08-24 at 2.05.07 PM

We are so excited to have Brighter Bites back at our school this year!  As always, Brighter Bites is free and open to all Cunningham families.  Bethany Dawson sent out the following message for us:

Hi parents! As many of you may have noticed at the Meet the Teacher event, Brighter Bites is returning to Cunningham this year!! We are so excited to partner with Cunningham again to continue to create a community of health through fresh food!

Please sign and return the Enrollment Form, which will be going home in your child’s folder tomorrow!

Every family that enrolls will receive two bags of fruits and veggies every Tuesday for 8 weeks in the fall AND 8 weeks in the spring. Your kids will be receiving fun nutrition education lessons from the CATCH program in their classrooms with their teachers, and you will be receiving nutrition handbooks, recipe cards, tip sheets, and more from us. Remember to pick up your kids from school FIRST and then come as a family to the cafeteria to pick up your produce and enjoy a quick game or learn something new with your kids at our activity table.

We are really emphasizing the nutrition education part of our program this year (CATCH). If you are not aware of the CATCH program at Cunningham, PLEASE ask your child’s teachers, coaches, or any of the Brighter Bites staff you see on Tuesdays to learn more! Your kids are going to be talking about GO, SLOW, and WHOA foods with you, so we want you to be on the same page and to get involved as much as possible!

Our first distribution for the fall will be Tuesday, September 6th. If you or anyone you know are able to volunteer to help prepare the bags of food from 7:45am-9:45am on Tuesdays, please contact Amanda Collinx to sign up. We will be preparing over 200 sets of bags for families, so we need all the help we can get!

Thank you so much, and I look forward to seeing everyone again. Please encourage new Cunningham families to join the program! 🙂
If you have any questions, you can ask the front office, Ms. Sherry Graham, or send me a message!
